Dark Roast is the younger of the two everyday brews at Tim Hortons, and for the chain it was a genuinely big deal: when it launched in August 2014 it was the first new blend served in restaurants in the company’s 50 year history. It costs exactly what the Original Blend costs, at every size, which was the promise in Tim Hortons’ own launch announcement. This page prices it, tells the story of its two reformulations, and deals with the caffeine question honestly.
Dark Roast prices
| Size | Price | Calories (black) |
|---|---|---|
| Small, 10 oz | $1.59–$1.65 | 3 |
| Medium, 14 oz | $1.83–$2.09 | 4 |
| Large, 20 oz | $2.07–$2.29 | 5 |
| Extra Large, 24 oz | $2.35–$2.69 | 5 |
The ladder is the standard brewed ladder, identical for Original Blend, Dark Roast and Decaf on every listing, and the black calories match too: a brewed coffee with nothing in it is close to zero whichever roast is in the pot. A Double Double built on Dark Roast costs the same as one built on Original, and the cream and sugar maths are the same as well.
Three versions since 2014
The Dark Roast in the pot today is the third version of the blend. The original, launched on August 15, 2014, was a premium 100 percent Arabica blend described by the company with hints of citrus, cocoa and earthy tones. In March 2017 Tim Hortons relaunched it darker and richer, roasted longer, with the cocoa and earthy notes kept up front. In 2021 it changed again, made bolder with Sumatra beans added, and tasting notes of chocolate, cedar and hints of fruit. If you remember the 2014 cup tasting different, you are right: it was a different recipe.
Caffeine, without a per-blend number
Dark roasting does not settle the caffeine question, and neither does Tim Hortons, which publishes no caffeine figures for any coffee. The most-cited third-party estimate table gives one set of figures for brewed coffee in general, roughly 140 milligrams in a small rising to about 330 in an extra large, with no split by blend. No source in our cross-check publishes a Dark Roast-specific number, so this page prints none. The wider caffeine picture is on the Nutrition and Allergens page.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Dark Roast at Tim Hortons?
The same as any brewed coffee: $1.59 to $1.65 for a small, $1.83 to $2.09 for a medium, $2.07 to $2.29 for a large and $2.35 to $2.69 for an extra large.
What is the difference between Dark Roast and Original Blend?
Roast level and recipe. Dark Roast is roasted darker and longer for a bolder, less acidic cup, and since 2021 it has included Sumatra beans. Price, sizes and black calories are identical.
Does Dark Roast have more caffeine than Original Blend?
Nobody publishes a per-blend figure, so any exact answer is a guess dressed up as a fact. The published estimates treat brewed coffee as one category, and the difference between roasts is small next to the difference between sizes.
When did Dark Roast launch?
August 15, 2014, as the first alternate blend in the company’s history. It was reformulated in 2017 and again in 2021.
